Investment Analyst
Investment Analyst (NYC/Remote)
Deadline 9/29/2022
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to support our investment and portfolio activities as we find, fund, and support the best water entrepreneurs in the world. This role requires the navigation of significant uncertainty, climbing a steep learning curve quickly, helping us refine our thesis around investments, and supporting current portfolio companies build their companies and their impact in water. It will also require entrepreneurial research – using our current sources, finding primary data in our network, and cultivating your own network and research ideas. Previous knowledge of the water sector is helpful, but not required. The role will require you to switch contexts often and effectively, as there are lots of plates that need to keep spinning. We think it’s the ideal starting point for a career in VC.
Key Responsibilities
Assist Partners in the initial assessment & management of incoming deal flow, as well as actively searching out the best companies in the water sector. Our job is to miss zero potential water investments worldwide.
Refine assessments of potential investments, from market sizing to competitive analyses.
Work with Partners to develop preliminary and final due diligence documents.
Assist with the support of portfolio companies. This will be vital given that we are closing in on 70% deployed in Fund I.
Identify, track & communicate key data and metrics from across the sector through BIV data sources and the broader BIV network.
Work with the BIV Team & Network to develop high-quality, industry-leading insight for internal and external purposes.
Be excited to roll up the sleeves on whatever needs doing, from cold outreach to internal operations. There is a lot to do.
Key Skills
We’re looking for someone who:
Has a 1-3 year professional track record of nailing everything that has been put in front of them to the wall.
Has a proven predilection for self-starting – you figure out what needs to be done and you do it, usually without being asked.
Is fun, interested, interesting, works hard, and learns fast.
Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and communicate complex, disparate data that may not be readily available.
Reads a lot & writes superbly.
Is a good judge of character.
Understands how to build a network.
Technical proficiency in analysis & design helpful (but we don’t need an excel jockey - familiarity with Excel/Sheets is fine).
Can refine the hell out of processes.
A great sense of humour.
Bonus points if you have:
Previous experience in research & analysis (data, water, climate, startups, anything pertinent).
Previous experience in startups.
Previous experience in the water sector.
Relevant operations knowledge (e.g. Zapier, Airtable, Squarespace, basic coding).
Compensation
Given that we are a small startup fund, this position will initially be slightly below market - $80,000 to $95,000 dependent upon experience, before bonus. Compensation will be brought in line with market once we have closed Fund II. Every BIV team member participates in Fund carry subject to a 5-year vesting period, 1-year cliff.
Benefits
Full Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance
401(k) through Carbon Collective with 4% match
Location
We have a slight preference for people who are/would like to be based in New York (Managing Partner based in Brooklyn), but is by no means required. Full team will come together every quarter in person.
Timing
We will set initial interviews in the fourth week of September, aiming for an early November start.
